President's Vision Statement
On March 17, 2011, West Virginia State University will celebrate the 120th anniversary
of its founding. As I look to that date and beyond, I want to share with you my vision for the University's future.
West Virginia State University will:
- Continue to emphasize the power of higher education and the importance of life-long learning;
- Increase the number of students we serve;
- Enhance its focus on the land-grant mission of teaching, research, and public service;
- Emphasize the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics;
- Add a new graduate school to the academic organization structure;
- Develop doctoral programs;
- Enhance its focus on extended learning;
- Increase the emphasis on international studies;
- Develop more activities that recognize and celebrate the importance of honor societies; and,
- Enhance its focus on service to humanity through education.
Additionally, I see a University that in the future will increase research activities that address the challenges that our society faces. The importance of teaching, research, creative work, scholarly activities, and public service will increasingly become components of the University's state, national , and international reputation.
West Virginia State will continue to move forward as a progressive, diverse, and comprehensive land-grant university. The strategic planning process will continue to be important as the University's tradition of progress continues in the 21st Century.
