WVSU Help for Haiti
The WVSU family rejoiced with assistant professor Dr. Paul Mocombe when he learned that his father had been found alive in the rubble following the earthquake in Haiti then shared in his sorrow on the news that his aunt and two cousins had not survived. Now the WVSU community is coming together in an organized effort to help the people of Haiti.
A candlelight vigil for Haiti was held on January 20 on the WVSU Student Plaza with students, faculty, staff attending. Dr. Mocombe spoke to the group. Boxes for donations have also be displayed around campus.
The National Center for Human Relations, Student Activities, The Leadership Club, the Office of Collegiate Support and Counseling (Multicultural Counselor) and the Public Relations Student Society are working on activities to occur during Black History Month.
One possible sustainable development to arise out of this collaboration has been a discussion around establishing a scholarship for a Haitian student to study at WVSU beginning this fall. Should this occur, this student’s progress could be tracked over time as Haiti rebuilds. A long term strategy which would indeed , promote WVSU and allow a student in dire need to “Experience the Power of Education!”
